In 1572, the first year of the reign of Emperor Wanli, Zhang Juzheng assumes office as the chief Grand Secretary of the cabinet - only to be confronted with a court teetering on the brink of financial collapse. Beginning with the bold move of converting payments in kind, he pushes forward with a series of sweeping reforms, despite intense opposition from all sides. From imposing taxes on hereditary farmland to enforcing the rigorous “Assessment System”, from curbing imperial privileges to implementing the transformative “Single Whip Law”, Zhang shoulders the burden of national affairs alone, risking everything in his quest for reform. Driven by deep concern for the fate of the state and the well-being of its people, in this play, his journey spans from the living world to the underworld, from the turbulent world of commoners to the imperial court, woven through intense conflicts and fierce clashes, unfolding the loyalty, responsibility, worries, and passion of a true reformer…
